ATKA, ALASKA / RankWire.AI / – A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck near Alaska’s Aleutian Islands on Saturday evening, with the epicenter southeast of Atka. The Alaska Earthquake Center recorded the quake at 7:36 p.m. Alaska Daylight Time on August 8. That was 03:36 UTC on August 9. The earthquake occurred about 48 miles, or 77 kilometers, southeast of Atka. Scientists measured its depth at about 17 kilometers, or 10.6 miles.

Alaska earthquake reaches magnitude 5.0 near Atka
Seismic networks recorded the magnitude 5.0 earthquake near Atka, Alaska.

The reviewed event occurred at 51.8286 degrees north and 173.2496 degrees west. Atka sits on Atka Island in the Aleutian chain, far from Alaska’s main population centers. The earthquake also occurred southwest of Seguam Island and Amukta Pass. Mount Sergief and several other islands lie within the broader area. The location places the event inside one of Alaska’s most active seismic regions, where earthquakes occur regularly across a wide range of depths.

The magnitude 5.0 Alaska earthquake was relatively shallow compared with many events that develop deeper beneath the Aleutians. Seismic activity in the region reflects the interaction of major tectonic plates beneath the North Pacific. The Pacific Plate moves below the North American Plate along the Aleutian Arc. That process creates frequent earthquakes from the western Aleutian Islands toward mainland Alaska. Scientists monitor the region continuously because of its sustained level of seismic activity.

Aleutian Arc drives frequent seismic activity

The Aleutian Arc extends across a long section of the North Pacific and forms a major plate boundary. Scientists describe the downward movement of one tectonic plate beneath another as subduction. This process produces earthquakes at shallow, intermediate and deep levels. Alaska experiences thousands of earthquakes each year, including many beneath or near the Aleutian Islands. The Alaska Earthquake Center operates monitoring stations that detect ground movement and help specialists determine an earthquake’s location, depth and magnitude.

The region also has a documented history of powerful earthquakes. A magnitude 8.6 earthquake struck the Andreanof Islands in 1957. The Rat Islands experienced a magnitude 8.7 earthquake in 1965. Large earthquakes also occurred around the Andreanof Islands in 1986 and 1996. Those events differed in size and location from Saturday’s magnitude 5.0 quake. They remain part of the wider seismic record associated with the active tectonic boundary beneath the Aleutian chain.

    Monitoring networks track Alaska earthquakes

Earthquakes in the Aleutians can originate in several parts of the tectonic system. Some occur near the main plate boundary, while others develop within the descending Pacific Plate. Shallow earthquakes can also form within the crust above the boundary. The U.S. Geological Survey maintains national seismic records and reviews earthquake measurements across Alaska and the rest of the country. Regional monitoring networks add detailed observations from stations positioned across the state’s vast and remote territory.

Saturday’s magnitude 5.0 earthquake adds another recorded event to the active seismic history of the Aleutian Islands. Its location southeast of Atka and its 17-kilometer depth identify the main characteristics of the quake. Monitoring stations captured the seismic signals and allowed specialists to refine the event data. Alaska’s wide geographic area and active plate boundary make continuous earthquake monitoring an important part of regional science, particularly across remote island communities spread along the Aleutian chain.
